Do you need a machine polish before a ceramic coating?

Why the paint is corrected before it's coated, what each stage of polish does, and how to get a quote from our Corstorphine Road centre.

· Autofoam Edinburgh

Yes. A ceramic coating seals in whatever is on the paint underneath it, swirls and light scratches included, so the paint is corrected first. That’s why every one of our ceramic coating packages includes a machine polish before the coating goes on. How much correction your paint needs depends on its condition. Here’s why the order matters, what each stage of polish does, and how to get a quote.

Why is the paint polished before a ceramic coating?

Because the coating locks in whatever it covers. A ceramic coating is a thin, clear, hard layer that bonds to the top of the paint. Any swirl marks, light scratches or dull patches left in the paint end up sealed underneath it, and the only way to put them right afterwards is to take the coating off again.

Polishing first means the coating protects a corrected finish rather than preserving the faults. It’s also why every one of our packages starts with a full decontamination wash: the paint has to be clean before it can be corrected, and corrected before it’s coated.

What does a machine polish actually do?

It takes defects out of the top layer of the paint instead of filling or hiding them. A machine polisher and a polishing compound level the clear coat very slightly, so swirls, light scratches and dulling are reduced or removed and the surface reflects light evenly again. That’s where the gloss and clarity come back from.

Polishing takes off a very thin layer of clear coat, which is why results vary with the condition, thickness and type of your paintwork. A scratch that has gone through the clear coat can’t be polished out safely, and thin paint can only be taken so far.

What’s the difference between a Stage 1 and a Stage 2 machine polish?

The depth of correction. We offer both:

  • Stage 1 Machine Polish. A single-stage machine polishing process designed to enhance gloss, improve paint clarity and reduce the appearance of light swirls and minor imperfections.
  • Stage 2 Machine Polish. A more intensive, two-stage polishing process designed to achieve greater paint correction by tackling more noticeable swirl marks, light scratches and other paint defects where possible.

In detailing generally, a two-stage polish means a cutting step that does most of the correcting, then a finer polishing step that refines the finish and brings the gloss back up. Which one your car needs depends on what’s in the paint. You’ll find both on our machine polishing page.

Which polish comes with each ceramic coating package?

Every package includes one:

  • Package 1 and Package 2 include a single-stage machine polish, to enhance gloss before the coating goes on.
  • Package 3, the Ultimate, includes a two-stage machine polish for enhanced paint correction, improved clarity and increased gloss.

The price of a coating depends on the size of the car, the condition of the paint and how much you want coated. You’ll find the packages and what each one includes on our ceramic coating page.

Can you have a machine polish without a ceramic coating?

Yes. Machine polishing is a service of its own at our centre, at Stage 1 or Stage 2, with no coating afterwards. The polish brings the gloss back; a coating is there to help protect it. Without one, regular careful washing is what keeps the finish looking good.

Is a ceramic coating worth it?

It’s worth it if you want to protect the finish a polish gives you. In general, a ceramic coating adds a hard, clear layer over the paint that takes the everyday wear instead of the clear coat, and water and dirt don’t cling to it as easily, so the car is easier to wash. It won’t stop stone chips or deep scratches, and it still needs washing. For stone chips, the answer is paint protection film, which we also offer.

Autofoam provides the warranty on our coatings, and we go through its terms, and the aftercare, with you at your appointment. We’re a SystemX approved installer.

How long does a ceramic coating take?

One day, for every package. You can drop the car at our centre from 8:30 in the morning, and we call you 30 minutes before it’s ready. A machine polish on its own takes as long as the car needs, so ask when you get your quote.

Can you get a quote from photos?

Yes. We can quote a machine polish or a ceramic coating from photos of your paint, or in person at our centre. For photos, use daylight or a bright, even light, and take each panel from a slight angle so the light shows up any swirls, plus a close-up of any scratch you’re worried about. Then send us your photos on WhatsApp.
